David Maquiling
Lecturer
Writer-director David Maquiling was born in New York and raised in the suburbs of New Jersey and the provinces of the Philippines. He is a magna cum laude graduate of the film program at New York University’s Tisch School of the Arts. Maquiling made his feature film debut with Too Much Sleep, which was produced by Michele Medina of Grassland Films and Jason Kliot and Joana Vicente of Open City Films.
Too Much Sleep earned Maquiling a Someone to Watch Award nomination at the 2002 IFP/West Independent Spirit Awards and a 2002 IFP/New York Project Involve Fellowship. That same year, Maquiling was elected to the Directors Guild of America, where he serves on the Asian American Committee.
A modern adaptation of a classic Filipino folk story, Too Much Sleep had its world premiere in the Competition section at the South By Southwest Film Festival, screened at more than 25 international festivals, was distributed theatrically by The Shooting Gallery (Sling Blade, You Can Count on Me, Croupier) and earned rave reviews from Roger Ebert, the Los Angeles Times, The New York Times, Chicago Tribune, Village Voice, The Denver Post, Entertainment Weekly and US magazine, among others.
Maquiling is the co-founder of the NewFilmmakers screening series at the Anthology Film Archives in New York, was the co-director of the 25th Annual New York Asian International Film Festival, and served as the head of the feature jury for the 22nd Los Angeles Asian Pacific Film Festival.
In addition to teaching at the UCLA School of Theater, Film and Television, Maquiling is currently a faculty member at the USC School of Cinematic Arts.
